Alpha Gas 2.0 is an enhancement product from Alpha Gas 1.0. As Alpha Gas 1.0 still doesn’t cater the needs of users, we started back from zero to build/design a product that will be beneficial towards them.

Research

Goals

Below are the areas that I’d like to explore during the user research process.

  • To understand about the user generally.
  • What are their responsibilities as a planner
  • For planning purpose, how do they get their information.
  • Users goal when they do their planning.
Methodologies

Research on the existing product to determine the gap that cause pain to the planner. Interviewed 5 planners from all different level to understand their pain points and their current journey.

User Interviews

Interviews Synopsis

I was surprised when some of them didn’t even know or heard about the existing Alpha Gas 1.0. This shows that the system was not utilized by the planner. For those who have heard it or used it before, eventhough they are system, but they tend to make their planning and decision manually as the dashboard does not provide the information they needed.  This led me to discover that what would help them to make it easier for them to gain information and decision making in one single platform.

User Persona

After I consolidated the outcomes from the interviews, I was able to come up with a persona that represents all 5 users.

Empathy Map

After creating my persona, I was able to create an empathy map that shows in-depth what does the users actually feel and their thoughts.

User Journey

From the interviews outcome, I was able to create a before and to-be user journey to understand the flow of before and after and see how does the to-be will benefit the users.

Ideation

Low Fidelity Design

I was assigned to create a design for the user dashboard. The first version of lo-fi design allowed me to see the structure of the dashboard and on which part needs improvement before we proceed to the Hi-fi design. This to reduce the number of iteration that will be made later on.

These are some samples of the Hi-Fi design. Here is where I assists designers to ensure the design are aligns with user’s goals. 

Usability Testing

We conducted two types of testing. Unmoderated testing and moderated testing.  From the unmoderated testing, we can conclude whether the design have good user experience or not. Do users know what to click or do they know hat to do next when they are inside the dashboard. For moderated testing, we can gain in-depth gathering of insights while having a conversation with users.

 

During the testing, we discovered that there are few things that needs to be addressed in the iteration:

  • Users had problems to craete a new scenario planning.

                Solution: Added a CTA specifically to craete a new scenario on top of the dashboard.

  • Users mentioned that the unit option is incomplete

                 Solution: Added a m3 unit to the dropdown

Conclusion

While working on this project, I learned that doing a research is important for making a good design for users and also to trust the process of the discovery as I started working on it with making different assumption on how to solve the problem. I learned to be flexible in solving the problem. I believe that minimizing the manual intervention in the end is fixing the problem at the core.
